How to Compare AI Writing Tool Pricing by the Unit

Jasper bills per seat, Copy.ai bills workflow credits, Writesonic bills articles per month and Rytr bills characters. No two of those units convert into each other, so the only honest comparison is cost per thing you actually publish. Figures read from each vendor's own page on October 21, 2026.

How to Compare AI Writing Tool Pricing by the Unit

Four AI writing tools meter four different units, which is why their pricing pages cannot be ranked side by side. Jasper's page lists $59/month billed yearly or $69/mo per seat. Writesonic's cheapest plan lists 15 AI articles per month. Copy.ai's mid plan lists 20K Workflow Credits/Mo. Rytr's free plan lists 10,000 characters per month. All four read on October 21, 2026. The only comparison that survives is cost per finished piece you intend to publish, so this note shows how to build that figure from each page.

Identify the unit before you look at the price

Jasper meters people. Its pricing page lists Pro at $59/month billed yearly or $69/mo, and the plan includes one seat, with Business priced on request against a twelve-month minimum commitment.

Copy.ai meters automation runs. Its Chat plan lists $29/mo billed monthly, or $24/mo billed $288/yr, with 5 Seats and Unlimited Words in Chat, checked October 21, 2026.

Writesonic meters finished articles. Its Starter plan lists $79 per month, billed annually, with 15 AI articles per month and 1 user, 1 project.

Rytr meters characters. Its free plan lists 10,000 characters per month, and its three paid plans list Unlimited characters per month, as of October 2026.

Those four units do not convert. A seat does not imply an article, and a credit does not imply a word, so a table of monthly prices ranks the vendors by nothing in particular.

Credits and articles are hard caps; seats and characters are not

Copy.ai's paid tiers climb by credit allowance. Growth lists $1,000/mo with 75 Seats and 20K Workflow Credits/Mo. Expansion lists $2,000/mo with 150 Seats and 45K Workflow Credits/Mo.

Scale lists $3,000/mo with 200 Seats and 75K Workflow Credits/Mo. Every paid tier also lists Unlimited Words in Chat, so the chat side is unmetered while the workflow side is capped.

The gap between tiers is the part to notice. Chat at $29/mo and Growth at $1,000/mo are the two cheapest paid options, a step of roughly 34 times with nothing printed in between.

Writesonic's caps are smaller and more legible. Basic lists $199 per month billed annually with 25 AI articles per month, and Growth lists $399 with 50 AI articles per month.

Growth also prints an overage rate, which is rare on these pages: +20 / $100/mo for extra articles. That turns a hard cap into a predictable marginal cost.

  • Write down the unit each page meters before you write down any price
  • Find out whether exceeding the allowance stops the tool or bills you, and at what rate
  • Check which features sit on the metered side and which sit on the unmetered side
  • Count extra seats separately, because a seat allowance and a usage allowance are two different caps

A small included allowance followed by a per-unit meter is now the standard shape across business software, not just writing tools. See what AI add-ons cost in small business tools.

Price the seats separately from the usage

Two of these pages bundle seats and two sell them. Copy.ai includes 5 Seats on its $29 Chat plan and 75 Seats on Growth, so a five-person team pays nothing extra for access.

Writesonic goes the other way. Its Basic plan lists 2 users, 1 project with extra seats at Up to 3 ($50/user/mo), and Growth lists 3 users, 2 projects with Up to 2 ($50/user/mo).

Editorial calculation from the listed rates: Writesonic Growth for five people is $399 plus two extra seats at $50, or $499 a month. The seat line adds a quarter to the bill.

Jasper bundles one seat into Pro at $59 per month billed yearly, and does not print a per-seat add-on rate for Pro on the pricing page we read.

Seat arithmetic is the same discipline as pricing a CRM, where the free tier cap decides when paid seats begin. The method is set out in how to compare CRM pricing for a small sales team.

Unlimited appears on two pages and means two different things

Rytr prints Unlimited characters per month on Lite at $9/mo, Personal at $19/mo and Pro at $49/mo. The unmetered object there is raw output length.

Copy.ai prints Unlimited Words in Chat on every paid tier. The unmetered object there is conversational use, while the workflow credits that drive automation stay capped.

So one page sells unlimited volume at $9 a month and another sells unlimited chat beside a $1,000 credit tier. The word carries no shared meaning between them.

Treat the word as a pointer to whatever the vendor chose not to meter, then go looking for what it did. The same reading applies in what unlimited calling really means in business phone plans.

Build a cost per published piece

This is the only figure that compares across units. Editorial calculation from the listed annual rates, assuming you publish the full allowance and nothing more. Figures checked October 21, 2026.

  • Writesonic Starter: $79 a month for 15 AI articles = $5.27 an article
  • Writesonic Basic: $199 a month for 25 AI articles = $7.96 an article
  • Writesonic Growth: $399 a month for 50 AI articles = $7.98 an article
  • Writesonic Growth overage: +20 articles for $100 a month = $5.00 an article, below its own base rate
  • Rytr Pro: $49 a month, no character cap printed, so cost per article falls with every piece you write
  • Jasper Pro: $59 a seat a month billed yearly, no output cap printed on the page we read
  • Copy.ai Chat: $29 a month with 5 seats, unlimited chat words and no workflow credits listed

Note that Writesonic's overage rate is cheaper per article than its base plan. That is unusual and worth checking at the payment step before you size the plan around it.

Where no cap is printed, cost per article is a function of how much you use the tool, not of the plan. Those two groups are not comparable on one axis.

What we could not read

Jasper's pricing page did not print a word, credit or generation cap for Pro on October 21, 2026. It refers usage-metered features on Business to a separate credits rate card we did not read.

So we cannot say Jasper is uncapped. We can say the cap, if any, was not on the pricing page we read that day.

Bottom line

Write down four things per vendor: the unit, the allowance, the overage rate, and the seats included. Then divide the monthly price by the output you actually plan to publish.

As of October 2026, the cheapest listed entry point among these pages is Rytr Lite at $9 a month with no character cap printed, then Copy.ai Chat at $24/mo billed $288/yr with five seats. Writesonic is the only one of the four that prints both a cap and the price of exceeding it, which makes it the easiest to budget.
